James O'Donnell, and Irish Protestant from New York, was the Basilica's architect.  Legend has it that the church was so beautiful, he converted to Catholicism.  The building was constructed 1824-1829.

The interior of the Basilica was inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.  Victor Bourgeau, designed the interior.  It was completed about 1880.

Henri Bouriche created the sculptures for the alter.  The Eucharist, Christ's sacrifice, is the centerpiece.  this sacrifice is announced in the Old Testament and depicted in four sculptures that surround the Crucifixion, Moses, Abraham & Issac, Aron, and Melchisedech.  There are also six statues portraying St. Peter, St. Paul, and the four  Evangelists.
