GIBSON GLEANINGS
September 3, 2010
By Barbara Ray

If you’re a ‘beach swimming, sun tanning’ kind of individual, you probably don’t look forward to Labor Day or the end of the summer season.  I, on the other hand, am doing my autumn happy dance!  Of all the seasons, this is my favorite.  Cool, crisp days mean perfect conditions for biking, walking or in my case, some serious yard work.  It’s simply a great time to be outdoors so grab your jacket or cap, head outside and enjoy the day!

We’ll be holding an End of Summer Ballroom Dance on Thursday, September 23rd in the activity room.  The dance starts at 6:30 and costs $6 so we hope you’ll mark your calendars and join us for a fun evening.  It’s almost Fryeburg Fair time and Jill is looking for crafters to let us borrow a sampling of their most recent creations.  Please label your items and bring them to Jill by September 29th.  She’ll also need a couple of artistic people willing to help set up the display after lunch on Thursday September 30th.

Have a good week, pray for our servicemen, the people of Haiti and those living along the Gulf coast.  God bless!

GIBSON GLEANINGS
August 27, 2010
By Barbara Ray

Just when you decide to stop listening to the news because it’s simply too depressing, you hear a story like this.  A young girl sees an elderly individual digging through a trash can searching for food.  Disturbed by what she has witnessed, the girl takes action.  For the past two years Hannah Dutton, a resident of our valley has held her birthday parties in the town park and asked her guests to bring cash donations instead of presents.  She has then presented all the funds to the Gibson Center for our nutrition program.  It seems Hannah has learned a lesson we all need to remember.  One person CAN make a difference.  Thank you Hannah.

Don’t forget our annual Labor Day Craft Fair will be taking place on September 4th & 5th.  We’ll have a lawn full of crafters from all over New England displaying and selling their amazing handmade wares.  R&R Woodworkers, a local crafter will be on hand with a display of their beautifully hand-made Adirondack chairs.  It’s always fun to see what new and exciting items are available.  Mark your calendars and plan to join us.  I also want to mention that the Carriage Shop is looking for a volunteer to work in the shop on Mondays.  If you’re interest, please call Karen at 356-3231.  Don’t forget to check the program listings below for additional programs and trips coming up.

By Barbara Ray

While in school I remember watching a documentary on the great depression.  I found it odd that during a very difficult time in our country’s history – foreclosures, high unemployment, market crashes, etc. – people were going out to dance marathons and movie theaters and watching “fluffy” Hollywood musicals full of well dressed rich folk sipping champagne.  Then it dawned on me.  People weren’t ignoring the bad things happening around them, they just needed a little break, an escape from all their troubles for an hour or two.  My mom had to quit high school in her teens and go to work to help out her family but I recall her telling me about the day she called in sick so she could sneak off to the movies and go to the theater to see “Gone With The Wind”.  If I close my eyes, I can still see that big smile on her face.
If you’re looking for some fun things to do this week I have a couple of suggestions.  We still have a couple of openings for the Ossipee Lake boat ride on Friday, August 6th from 9:30 – 3:00.  The trip includes a narrated tour of this beautiful lake describing the history, flora and fauna, a box lunch and a stop for ice cream on the way home. We hope you’ll join us for the White Lake picnic on Wednesday, August 25th.  Say you’re from Gibson and receive free admission into the park.  The suggested donation for lunch is $4.  Bring your lawn chair, sun screen and a hat.  Plan to play cards, walk around the lake, go swimming or kayaking.  Lunch is served at noon, but come early and stay late.   Wednesday afternoons you can join us for game day or stop by Friday mornings and sign up for a ballroom dance class.  Don’t forget to check the program listings below for additional programs and trips coming up.
Have a good week, pray for our servicemen, the people of Haiti and those living along the Gulf coast.  God bless!

Did you ever have “one of those days”?  Well for me, it was one of those weekends.  It all started one evening with an ache in my lower back.  By the next morning I was walking around looking like the hunchback of Notre Dame.  I made a visit to the local clinic, got plenty of bed rest and am now able to walk in a normal, upright position!  It wasn’t one of my most exciting 4th of July weekends but… all’s well, that ends well.  Hope you had a good one.
Things went along much better here at the center this past weekend.  The weather was amazing and we had a great turnout for our annual craft fair.  Thanks to all who came out to support this fine event.  With the summer season in full swing, I want to let everyone know there will be a Summer Evening Ballroom Dance taking place this Wednesday, July 14th from 6:30 – 9:00 pm.  Jill is busy preparing the activity room for this fun event and Alice Clapp will be on hand to host the event, set up the music and help you with some great dance moves.  The cost is only $6 plus a canned good for our food pantry.  It’s a fun time with plenty of refreshments so we hope you will join us.
Have a good week, pray for our servicemen, the people of Haiti and those living along the Gulf coast.  God bless!

June 25, 2010

I was sitting at my desk last week when I looked at the calendar and suddenly realized that next week we’d be celebrating the 4th of July.  It was rather alarming.  Where had June gone??  I guess what my mother use to say really is true – the older you get, the faster time goes.  Happy Independence Day!
I would be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone that our annual 4th of July Craft Fair will be going on this coming weekend.  Hopefully the weather will be good so people can park their cars and enjoy a leisurely stroll through town and the fair.  There will be a great variety of craftsmen here for this two day event and lots of great deals.  R&R Woodworkers, a local crafter will be here with some of their beautifully hand-made Adirondack chairs as well as dealers from all over New England.  Mark you calendars and plan to join us any time from 10:00 to 5:00 this coming Saturday & Sunday.
In closing, we received some sad news regarding one of our long time volunteers and Francine wanted to include a few words of remembrance in this week’s Gleanings.
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of one of our volunteers, Yvonne Kinsman of Bartlett. Yvonne devoted many years and many hours to maintaining our Bartlett Meal Site at the VFW on River St.
Every Wednesday, Yvonne faithfully appeared at the meal site to organize for the noontime meal delivered by volunteers from the Gibson Center kitchen. She spent many hours over the sink, her hands protected by rubber gloves, scraping, brushing, soaking and rinsing, and always happy to do it.  As Bartlett’s beloved Helen Hayes became frailer, Yvonne picked her up and took her safely home, so she wouldn’t miss out on the camaraderie, the highlight of her week. Yvonne’s care and concern were deeply appreciated by Helen.  It is to these volunteers, such as Yvonne, who retired quietly after the meal site was closed, but became a weekly diner at Gibson, that we owe such a debt of gratitude for supporting the Gibson Center’s mission to maintain senior wellness and independence. We pray that she is at peace.
Have a good week, pray for our servicemen, the people of Haiti and those living along the Gulf coast.  God bless!

Welcome the first official day of summer!  While Spring arrived early this year, we have had several teasers, but perhaps real summer like weather will be here to stay!  Even though the weather has been on and off this Spring, it is certainly better then the last two rainy Springs and Summers.  Our garden is actually green this year…it is getting some sunlight and water…maybe we will finally have tomatoes fresh from the garden Smiley  Shocked

Sometime peer support is accountability, and that is just what we need to meet our goals, especially those goals that we know are good for us!  There are people who meet every Friday morning and go for a walk.  Some are meanderers, who stop and smell the flowers, others are more experienced walkers, who are out for a cardiovascular workout.  Which ever group you are in, there are people who will walk with you!  Join us this Friday at 10:15 for our Walking Club.  We will be back in time for lunch.

With summer finally here, we’re looking for some senior volunteers to sub for us in the dining room.  If you have two free hours during the week, please contact the nutrition department at 356-3231

You can learn about other programs and trips coming up by going to our web site at www.gibsoncenter.org/social.  Have a good week, pray for our servicemen, the people of Haiti and those living along the Gulf coast.  God bless!

About twenty years ago, my uncle came for a visit and as a special treat I stopped at a local farm stand to buy fresh corn.  Unfortunately, when he found out I had paid 30 cents an ear he told me he couldn’t possibly eat it   At that price, the corn just wouldn’t taste any good.  My uncle passed away a few years ago so I can only imagine what he would say to me if he ever heard how much I paid for a bag of bing cherries yesterday.  Oh Lord!!

We have some great programs going on this week including a presentation on the USO by a friend of the Waltzes this Thursday, June 17th at 12:30.  He is taking a bike trip to raise funds and awareness of this great and very important organization. Later that evening, Alice Clapp is back to host our first Summer Solstice dance from 6:30 – 9:00.  The cost is $6 plus a donation to our food pantry.  Hope you will join us.  We also hope you can come to our special Father’s Day luncheon on Friday June 18th.  We’re looking forward to honoring all you Dads out there.  With summer finally here, we’re looking for some senior volunteers to sub for us in the dining room.  If you have two free hours during the week, please contact the nutrition department at 356-3231

Greetings from sunny South Carolina!  My husband and I had the opportunity to spend a week down on Hilton Head Island with a great group of friends last week and I must say it was beautiful.  There was Spanish moss everywhere, magnolia trees beginning to bloom, palm trees, hibiscus, cardinals, woodpeckers, cranes, egrets and dolphins.  My personal favorite was the young four foot crocodile that would sun himself along the banks of the water channel just behind our condo.  Nevertheless I was glad to get home; that is until I realized I would have to get the wood stove going every night this week!  Brrrrr.
I hope you all remember that this Sunday May 23rd the Mason’s Breakfast will benefit programs at the Gibson Center.  It’s a complete breakfast and will run from 8-11a.m.  Cost is a donation.  On May 29 & 30 we will be having our annual Memorial Day craft fair.  There will be a tremendous variety of crafters on hand and it’s a great way to start off the summer season.  Please mark your calendars and plan to join us.  I’m told we are looking for a volunteer to work in the Carriage Shop either Monday or Wednesday mornings 10:00-12:30.  If you have two hours a week to spare please contact Karen at 356-3231.  You can check the schedule of programs below to see what other activities are taking place this week at the center or go to our web site at www.gibsoncenter.org/social.  You can also find a copy of the Gleanings on this web site if you happen to miss the daily paper
